Lagorai territory

The Lagorai

The Lagorai, located in the eastern region of Trentino, stretches between Valsugana and Val di Fiemme, also embracing Val di Cembra, Val Campelle, and parts of Tesino and Primiero. This mountain chain extends over 70 kilometers, offering one of the last immaculate corners of the Dolomites.

The Lagorai chain is characterized by the predominance of volcanic rocks known as “porfido quarzifero” from the Tesino region. This geological formation, dating back about 290-274 million years ago, is the result of ancient volcanic eruptions that shaped the landscape into a series of sharp peaks, deep valleys, and imposing ridges. The porous nature of the “porfido” makes the soil particularly resistant to erosion, helping to preserve the area’s unique structure.

The Lagorai area stands out for its varied terrain, alternating between gentle slopes and more rugged ridges. The main peaks, such as Cima Cece (2,754 m), the highest of the group, and the summits of Monte Croce (2,490 m) or Monte Cauriol (2,494 m), offer spectacular views and represent an exciting challenge for more experienced hikers. The valleys are often crossed by streams fed by glacial lakes and natural springs, creating a landscape full of contrasts.

One of the most fascinating aspects of the Lagorai is the presence of numerous alpine lakes, small gems nestled between the mountains. Some of the most well-known are Lago di Erdemolo, famous for its crystal-clear waters, the Laghetti di Lagorai, and the picturesque Lago di Cima d’Asta, located at the foot of the peak of the same name. These bodies of water not only add beauty to the landscape but also serve as a precious habitat for numerous species of flora and fauna.

Thanks to its location and geological formation, Lagorai hosts extraordinary biodiversity. The alpine meadows, coniferous forests, and pastures are home to a wide variety of species. Rhododendrons, lichens, and gentians add vibrant colors to the landscape, making it a paradise for nature lovers.
