Rifugio Cauriol

At an altitude of nearly 1,600 meters in Val di Sadole, Rifugio Cauriol is a serene retreat immersed in nature. From Ziano di Fiemme, follow the signs, and from the parking area, walk the final kilometer along a peaceful dirt road in about 20 minutes. Alternatively, take the trail marked “Strada Vecia de Sadole” for a roughly one-hour hike.

Family-run mountain hut

As soon as you see it, you immediately sense that every detail of Rifugio Cauriol tells a story of simplicity, authenticity, and love for the mountains. With the warm hospitality of Barbara and Tommaso, the atmosphere is truly family-like, even welcoming four-legged friends.

The recently renovated structure offers a total of 20 beds, divided into shared rooms: one double, one quadruple, and two rooms for seven people each, with two bathrooms available for guests.

The essential yet thoughtful accommodations make the stay comfortable for all ages, especially hikers. Notably, you can use the storage service for backpacks and personal belongings while trekking along the Translagorai, the famous hiking trail where Rifugio Cauriol serves as a key stop.

Farm-to-table cuisine

The kitchen offers traditional Trentino dishes prepared with fresh and genuine ingredients, many sourced from the farm run by Daniele, Barbara and Tommaso’s son.

You’ll embark on an extraordinary journey through local flavors, honoring tradition: polenta, stews, gulaschsuppe, polenta gnocchi with cheese cream, fasoi en Bronzon, sauerkraut made with cabbage from the family farm, and handmade desserts such as strudel, tarts, and other exquisite treats.

To drink, enjoy fresh Lagorai water served in glass jugs, Trentino wines (such as Teroldego and Marzemino), and the special Fiemme beer.

Feel at home

Families will find Rifugio Cauriol a haven of happiness: the wooden playground makes it ideal for children, while adults can relax on the panoramic terrace or in the park below, admiring the stunning views of the surrounding peaks and listening to the gentle flow of the crystal-clear stream.

History enthusiasts will appreciate the small museum at Rifugio Cauriol, which preserves artifacts from World War I, collected from the peaks of Val di Sadole and Ziano di Fiemme by the first manager, Aldo Zorzi. This corner of remembrance, accompanied by a small mountain library, offers an opportunity to explore the roots of the Lagorai.

What to do in summer

In summer, the hut serves as the perfect starting point for hikes to Monte Cauriol, Cardinal, Canzenagol, Busa Alta, the “Three Lakes Loop,” or the “Summit Loop,” all areas rich in history and World War I fortifications.

For less experienced hikers or families, the Pian delle Maddalene is reachable in less than 30 minutes from the hut. This tranquil, verdant plain features a refreshing stream where grazing horses often drink during the summer.

For those tackling the Translagorai Classic FKT from Passo Rolle to Panarotta in under 24 hours, the hut provides a vital rest and accommodation point. If you’re into bouldering, you can borrow up to four crash pads for your safety.

What to do in winter

In winter, Rifugio Cauriol is accessible only on foot via a two-hour hike through uniquely enchanting snow-covered landscapes. On weekends, the hut opens its doors to warm up or spend the night after snowshoeing adventures.

Cultural events

The hut also hosts events featuring authors, mountain guides, alpine choirs, and astronomers. Additionally, accessible hikes are available for individuals with disabilities, led by Anna, Barbara and Tommaso’s daughter, who holds a degree in Environmental Sciences and will guide you through the wonders of the Lagorai.
