Nestled in the heart of the Lagorai, Malga Cere welcomes you to a family-run, eco-friendly retreat powered by photovoltaic panels, offering stunning views and a deep connection to nature.
To reach Malga Cere, take the SS47 of Valsugana: from Bassano del Grappa, exit at Castelnuovo – Passo Manghen; from Trento, exit at Borgo Valsugana – Passo Manghen. Continue towards Telve on the SP31, and in the Calamento area, after passing the Hotel Aurai, continue for about 1 km until you reach the parking lot near a yard used for wood storage.
From there, choose between the SAT 398 trail (2.5 km, 400 m elevation gain, easy) or the forest road (4.5 km, 400 m elevation gain). You can hike, bike, ski, snowshoe, or even ride a horse. For small children, bring a child carrier or trekking stroller.
Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted by Luigi, his wife Giulia, and their daughter Rosa, born here ten years ago and considered the heart of the malga. The hut offers 12 beds in three shared dormitories with communal bathrooms. For camping enthusiasts, there’s a spacious meadow where you can pitch your own tent or rent one on-site.
In summer, the malga provides over 100 seats across an indoor dining room, outdoor tables, and a covered panoramic terrace. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy a meal amidst the beauty of Val Calamento, surrounded by green meadows and woods, alongside grazing donkeys, chickens, and other animals under the blue alpine sky.
Each day, the kitchen prepares six dishes using organic, locally sourced, and seasonal ingredients to minimize waste.
The cuisine is a journey through Trentino flavors, with gluten-free options and customized dishes for intolerances: homemade bread with sourdough and flours strictly from organic farming, canederli with Trentino DOC cheeses and Puzzone di Moena, game, and vegetarian and vegan dishes.
Desserts, including yogurt from the malga and fresh fruit juices, are all made on-site. Beverages are served in glass containers, reinforcing the commitment to sustainability.
Malga Cere is also a symbol of culture. Here, you can take part in workshops for children, cultural events, and educational activities led by mountain experts, or browse the well-stocked library—perfect for those who want to deepen their knowledge of the area. The malga is also a stop along the Ippovia of Eastern Trentino, welcoming dozens of horses and riders each year as they journey through these pristine lands.
For guided hikes and educational workshops, you can rely on Luca Stefenelli, a Medium Mountain Guide, landscape educator, and founder of Montanamente. The long-standing collaboration between Mountanamenteand Malga Cere were born the Educational Programs for Schools.: four themed routes on climate, landscape, biodiversity and history.
Malga Cere is deeply committed to environmental stewardship, demonstrated by its certifications through Ecoristorazione Trentina and Economia Solidale Trentina. Collaborations with organizations such as the WWF Valtrigona Oasis, the Lagorai Ecomuseum, and Artesella highlight its dedication to preserving the natural and cultural heritage of the area.
The mission is to promote responsible tourism and exemplary sustainable management, respecting the environment and enhancing the mountains with concrete actions that make a difference: a slow food approach to rediscover the pleasure of slowness; compostable detergents, no plastic bottles or other single-use plastic packaging; sustainable energy from a photovoltaic panel system.
The plains surrounding Malga Cere offer stunning views of the Lagorai peaks. Visitors can enjoy mushroom foraging with a permit obtained at the malga, explore the picturesque Valle delle Maddalene, or hike to landmarks such as Monte Setole Summit, Cresta di Valpiana, or Cima del Bortolo.
For those interested in history, a trek to the Herta Miller Haus provides a moving connection to World War I. Each step in this captivating landscape offers a chance to immerse yourself in the natural beauty and rich heritage of the Lagorai region.
For guided hikes and workshop activities you can rely on Luca Stefenelli, a mid-mountain guide, landscape educator and founder of Montanamente. He has been collaborating with us for several years and with him we have designed these Educational programs for schools. Luke is also available for guided hikes and learning about the naturalistic and cultural aspects of the itineraries we offer.
A historic and nature-focused trekking route along untouched ridgelines and old military paths, once crossed by chamois and shepherds, and now echoing the past of the First World War. Along the way, you’ll discover Forcella delle Maddalene and its beautiful valley, the Herta Miller Haus, an open-air museum and former Austrian field hospital from 1915, located on Cima Valpiana, and the Lago delle Buse, a protected natural area and hidden gem of Trentino.
Trail 398 stretches through coniferous forests and is well-marked with white and red paint indicators, covering a distance of about 2.5 km. The trail is of difficulty E, suitable for hikers: it follows a well-defined path or trail, with some steep sections.
Ring-shaped route that leads to the summit of Monte Setole (2,208 m), then continues to the Maddalene saddle (forcella) and crosses the stunning valley of the same name. From the summit and the saddle, you can enjoy a wide panoramic view of some of the most prominent peaks of the Lagorai–Cima d’Asta group, such as Pala del Becco, Cima Ziolera, Cima d’Asta, and, in the distance, the Pale di San Martino.
